What is chutney and where does it come from?

Chutney is a sauce or condiment originating from India, which has gained popularity in many cuisines around the world. Traditionally, chutney is made from a mix of fruits, vegetables, spices, sugar, and vinegar, creating a combination of sweet, spicy, and tangy flavours. This versatility makes it an ideal accompaniment for a wide variety of dishes, from meats and fish to cheeses and breads, as the acidity and sweetness cut through the fat or saltiness like a hot knife though cheese butter.

The term “chutney” comes from the Hindi word “chatni,” which means “to crush” or “to grind.” In India, there are multiple regional variants of chutney, which can be fresh or cooked, and are served both in daily meals and special festivities. Its popularity has spread globally, adapting to the tastes and preferences of different culinary cultures.

What types of Chutneys exist?

There are many types of chutney, each with its own flavour profile and culinary use. Among the most well-known chutneys are:

  • Mango Chutney: Probably the most famous, this chutney combines the sweetness of ripe mango with spices and vinegars to create a perfect balance between sweet, sour and spicy. • Tamarind Chutney: Made with tamarind, sugar, and spices, this chutney is known for its sweet and sour flavour and is very popular in Indian cuisine.
  • Mint and Cilantro Chutney: Fresh and vibrant, this chutney is a blend of mint leaves, cilantro, green chilies, and lemon. It is commonly used for appetisers or as a compliment to main dishes.
  • Tomato Chutney: This chutney is made with cooked tomatoes, onions, sugar, and spices, offering a sweet and spicy flavour that complements many dishes.
  • Onion Chutney with Port Wine: We slow cook this chutney with Port wine, a blend of vinegar and delicate spices to create a wonderful accompaniment to cheeses, cured meats and barbecues.
